The Celebrated Filmmaker and Designer Olympia Le-Tan Co-create a Tale to Pierce the Heart

Designer Olympia Le-Tan's embroidered clutch-bags spring to life in director Spike Jonze’s tragicomic stop-motion animation Mourir Auprès de Toi (To Die By Your Side). On a shelf in famed Parisian bookstore Shakespeare and Company, the star-crossed love story of a klutzy skeleton and his flame-haired amour plays out amidst Le-Tan’s illustrations of iconic first-edition book covers. "It's such a beautiful and romantic place,” offers Le-Tan of the antiquarian bookstore. "The perfect setting for our story!” The project started after Jonze asked for a Catcher in the Rye embroidery to put on his wall and the plucky Le-Tan asked for a film in return. Enlisting French filmmaker Simon Cahn to co-direct, the team wrote the script between Los Angeles and Paris over a six month period, before working night and day animating the 3,000 pieces of felt Le-Tan had cut by hand. “I love getting performances from, telling stories about and humanizing things that aren’t human,” said Jonze of working with Le-Tan’s characters. After spending five years adapting Maurice Sendak’s Where The Wild Things Are, Jonze’s recent shorts include robot love story I’m Here and an inspired G.I. Joe-starring video for The Beastie Boys. “A short is like a sketch,” he says. “You can have an idea or a feeling and just go and do it.” Here the iconic director reveals his creative process to writer Maryam L'Ange.

How did the film come about?
I met Olympia in Paris through friends of mine. She was just starting to make the bags for her friends. She had a bunch of the scraps in her bag, all of the cut-out pieces of felt. I just loved it. I loved all the artwork she picked, the texture of it, the stitching of the felt. We joked about making a film and just went for it. It was this thing with no schedule, no pressure and no real reason to be—other than just that we thought it would be fun.

Did you write the story together?
Yeah we did. We would look at all the artwork over lunch whenever we would be in the same city, noting any ideas that would just make us smile. It was done like that, with no real plans.

What’s your creative process?
You just start with what the feeling is. For this one the feeling definitely started with the handmade aesthetic and charm of Olympia’s work. Instantly I had the idea of doing it in a bookstore after-hours, imagining the lights coming down and these guys off their books. Me and Olympia both wanted to make a love story, and it was fun to do it with these characters. It evolved naturally and it all just started with the feeling. From there you entertain yourself with ideas that excite you.

Do you go with your gut instinct?
If it cracks me up. We were talking about the skeleton coming off his book and the girl in the Dracula book waving at him. Olympia is someone who is just absurd, she’s used to just saying anything. She just started making the blowjob gesture as a joke to make us laugh but I was like, “We’ve got to do that.” It’s about taking things that could just be a joke while brainstorming and actually going for it and using it.

What inspires you?
People inspire me. Humberto Leon and Carol Lim [from Opening Ceremony] and the confidence and creativity in how they run their business. Pixar’s really inspiring, they make films in the best possible way. They’re always focused on story. I could list a million people that inspire me all the time. David Bowie’s music, Charlie Kauffman, David Russell. A lot of people that I work with too, just conversations I have with them about what we want to do.

Ahh April!

For many it is feeling like the

winter will never end but here in California it is feeling like

the middle of summer (at least this week).

To me, April is always associated with

the spring break road trips- like the ones we took with the kids,

Palm Springs, the college town (and food ) tour from Georgia

to Indiana,

the amusement park tour (Ross and kids)...

it is also the time of year, where I can't get enough of

local nurseries, seed banks, gardening and

getting my hands dirty along with plenty of sweat equity.

It is the time of year to take stock of details~

inside and out

prepare for the next two seasons

as we will fill them with outdoor living,

laughing, cooking, eating and sharing with

the friends and family

who mean so much.

With that in mind, I am on hiatus...

taking time to listen to the birds sing,

pro create (ART ~FOOD~ FLOWERS)

go exploring and of course, smell the roses.

Here's to hoping you get out and do the same.

has heard of, (if not enjoyed)

In- N-Out Burger. It's kind of a cult thing.

Their menu is one born of simplicity ...or so it seems-

when you look at the menu offering their

burger, cheeseburger, fries and shakes.

However, there is a secret menu offering up

combinations many are familiar with and there is a

super secret menu which few are familiar with...

Of course, everyone knows about grilled onions

but they also will grill whole onion slices.

A new underground favorite is 'mustard-grilled'

where after cooking one side, they squirt mustard on the patty

before flipping it.

Do you like things spicy?

Ask for 'Chopped Chilies' and if you want them on the side, they'll give

them to you in a sealed baggie.

Everyone knows about 'Animal Style'

(grilled onions, mustard, extra spread and pickles)

But how about 'The Flying Dutchman' animal style?

That's with two patties/ two cheese/ no bun

If you're a fry freak like me ~

(frankly, I'm not a huge fan of their fries they remind me of

Pik-Nik Stix) but they are improved when ordered

'Well Done' AND when they are included

in the order as 'Fries Inside'.

And of course, I usually get a Diet Coke-

you've got to cut out somewhere, but if you like

shakes with your fries, why should you choose one flavor,

when you can order all three~ 'Neopolitan style'

Research like this takes time and effort, of course, so

this definitely gets filed under the category of...

it's a big job~but somebody has to do it.

I love to use art as a decorating element,

in fact, I find it indispensable. Yes,

it adds color, symmetry and of course (or hopefully)...
makes a statement, communicates.
I am not opposed to employing the DIY approach to art-
in fact, I do so quite often. Bold move?
Perhaps, but much of art (while subjective),
is part talent, part confidence
and part chutzpah.
On that note, look at James Nares and his
off the charts brush strokes.

He is a London-born artist, filmmaker, and musician based in New York. His paintings are like strokes of calligraphy, magnified and flowing across large format canvases.

To achieve the look, Nares suspends himself over the canvas in a selfmade harness, and paints one continuous stroke using large brushes he developed himself.

"I found that brushes are like characters in a way: Each one does a different dance."

Of course, you don't need to hang from a pulley,

have a hand stretched canvas or even expensive materials

to create a work of art yourself, but what you do need is

an open mind and a bit of cheeky confidence.

Don't you love going to vintage collective stores?

You know the 'antique' stores that are generally larger

than single owner shops and house a multitude

of collections from as many vendors. Kind of like
well edited flea market, kind of like a grown up
treasure hunt. A new one has opened up in San Francisco,
aptly called Stuff.

"It's an 8,200-square-foot collective in San Francisco's Mission District with more than 25 dealers peddling very cool items. These are professionals who comb estate sales, flea markets and who-knows-where for real finds. The dealers (the famed Ron Morgan and Christopher Albanese among them) know treasure from trash, and they are selling the good stuff here." via CHD

There is quite a bit of furniture from the 1960's
Plus, plenty of furniture variations, framed artwork,
decorative accessories, collectibles around every corner.

There's even a parking lot: Lenker says that they will have a flea market in the lot once a month. If the store is any indication of the goods that will be available, you won't want to miss these.

Stuff is located at 150 Valencia St. in San Francisco (the old Cottrell's Moving Company building). It's open every day from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. No website, but you can learn more on their Facebook page: Stuff SF.

Between foresight and luck, we have

been blessed with lemons and arugula almost year round here.

When I saw this recipe. I knew it was a must share-

all of the ingredients are easily had, regardless of

where you live or the state of your garden.

Asparagus and Lemon Risotto with Arugula Recipe

10 cups vegetable stock

1 1/2 cups chopped asparagus

4 tablespoons butter

2 cups arborio or carnaroli or vialone rice

1/2 cup dry white wine

1/2 cup arugula leaves, shredded

1/4 cup or more grated Parmesan

2 teaspoons lemon juice

1/4 teaspoon lemon zest

There is a sandwich craze going on
across America and of course,
we here in San Francisco are at the forefront.
It's called banh mi...
Begin with a whole baguette, preferably baked in-house and dressed with an aioli spread infused with pork, garlic and fish sauce. These ingredients then hold a wide variety of fillings: barbecue pork, fried tofu and thick-sliced ham are the most common options, along with pork pâté, grilled chicken, meatballs, sauteed vegetables. via NY Times

The local favorite counter is
Saigon Sandwich located in The Tenderloin-

-no not a pretty neighborhood and nothing much to look at inside,
but so worth the jaunt and well, the risk.

"I decided to listen to the other yelpers and try the Roast Pork banh mi with pate ($3.75). The bread was perfectly toasted and very fresh. It does not cut the roof of your mouth but is still crunchy. The sauce they put in the sandwich is runny and was dripping out as I took each bite! I don't really know what the sauce is made of but i'm guessing a combination of mayo and pork drippings. Yuummmmm! This banh mi is set apart from all others i've tried because of this runny, drippy sauce.

You know the place is good when you are still thinking about the delicious mouth watering viet sandwich you had and your 100 miles away. Well i got the chicken sandwich with peppers because i like spicy and it was incredible, the flavor, the texture, the crispy, and the tender. Sandwiches come in chicken pork and combination. they are i still believe $3.50 for one. But this has got to be the best place for viet sandwiches in the city because I tried other places and they do not even compare. Yummy food makes happy people. :)

When you see the words

"Made In The USA" on a garment, there is always a sense of pride-

you know, think, support, shop, act locally...

I think I have an even higher expectation for this concept

when I know a garment is from a local designer or small line.

However, quite often due to prohibitive production

costs and high production quotas,

this is rarely the case.

Enter the Portland Garment Factory

founded and co owned by Britt Howard,

mother, model and designer of her own children's clothing line.

After having trouble finding a local manufacturer for her

new venture...

'she opened a tiny storefront to sew for Portland's growing legion of independent designers (that includes three competitors and two winners of the reality show Project Runway) and two years, more than a few eighty-hour work weeks, and a business partner (Rosemary Robinson) later, PGF is now a booming enterprise. Today, the upstart completes orders for clients as far-flung as New York and Los Angeles in an airy new warehouse space in Portland's bustling Montavilla neighborhood.'

"It's been like, zero to sixty for us," Robinson described. "We're thinking about opening another location, maybe in San Francisco or Austin. But we'd want to keep it personal, to be able to keep that close relationship with the people we work with."

And being a local manufacturer does enable PGF to have a more involved relationship with their clients. As their motto says, "We got your back." Unlike overseas manufacturers, they'll produce lots of as small as twenty units as well as in the thousands. Along with an army of eager interns, the plant also provides design consulting services, and Howard often finds herself serving as a de facto business counselor. "Sometimes I feel like I'm giving a seminar everyday," Howard said with a laugh. "This is your retail price, and this is your wholesale price."

For small designers, PGF's prices are comparable to—and the timeframe infinitely friendlier than—sending garments halfway around the world. That's in addition to higher-quality craftsmanship, as well as the assurance that it's sewn with pride by workers who are treated well.

This weekend is the culmination of Chinese New Year celebration

and in many cities there will be a big,

bright and very festive parade.

Here is San Francisco, where we have one of the largest

Chinese populations outside of mainland China.,

the streets, shops and temples of Chinatown have been

overflowing with signs of celebration.

The color red is everywhere as it represents wealth and happiness,

orange and tangerine trees grace the doorways representing

good health and long life, tangerines with leaves attached

are said to bring long lasting relationships.

There are so many deep rooted traditions and customs,

which many of us like to think, transcend the Chinese culture.

I love having a dinner, to celebrate, the new year,

the gift of friendship, and to share good wishes

for prosperity and long life.

I've decided to share a few of my favorite recipes here.

Braised Soy Sauce Chicken

Chiang-yu-chi

This is awesome! I found it years ago in a cookbook I'd gotten

from the library. (this recipe is exactly the same)

A 4½-to 5-pound roasting chicken

2 cups cold water 2 cups soy sauce

¼ cup Chinese rice wine, or pale dry sherry

5 slices peeled, fresh ginger root about 1 inch in diameter and 1/8 inch thick

1 whole star anise, or 8 sections star anise

¼ cup rock candy broken into small pieces, or substitute 2 tablespoons granulated sugar

1 teaspoon sesame-seed oil

Sesame Chile Sauce

(someone gave me this recipe-

and if I could figure out a way to bottle it- I think I could retire)

1 8oz jar Plum Sauce

1/3 C Hoisin Sauce 1/4 C Soy Sauce

3TBS Honey 3TBS Water

2 Cloves Minced Garlic 2 tsp Grated Gingerroot

11/2 Asian chili Sauce 1/2tsp 5 Spice Powder

Combine all ingredients in saucepan,

cook until bubbly, then simmer for 5 min

(I cannot emphasize how good this is with the chicken)

(This slaw is actually hot and sweet-and very refreshing!

I like to up the cabbage and carrots

and reduce the sugar to taste)

Hunan Hot and Sour Dressing For Noodles

(These noodles are so good- you'll want them for breakfast/lunch and dinner the next day)

4 tablespoons crunchy peanut butter ( or combination of the two)
2 tablespoons soy sauce
4 tablespoons vinegar
1 tablespoon hot red hot pepper oil (or use Asian chili sauce)
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon sugar
1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
2 tablespoons corn oil or 2 tablespoons sunflower oil or 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 tablespoon ginger, minced
1 tablespoon garlic, minced
1 tablespoon scallions, minced
1 tablespoon white wine
1 teaspoon hot mustard (optional)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups broth ( chicken or vegetable)Mix together in blender, pour over and mix withAsian noodles (found in refrigerated section)
These recipes are really super simple. (Trust me) Of course, because abundance is the name of the game for this celebration, you really cannot have too much food on the table...I also like to serve Mongolian Orange Beef,Barbecued Ribs, Asparagus with Black Bean Sauce,Tangy Spinach with Peanuts

Our Meyer Lemon season is getting going

now, which signifies all that is right in the world.

The days (and nights!) have been so beautiful this week,

I can't help, but open up the gateway

to the weekend with a

super sunny, and delicious

Citrus Margarita. This recipe calls for only Meyer Lemons,

but as we also have limes and oranges waiting to drop,

I think a mixed bag is in order- adjust as needed.

Meyer Lemon Margarita Recipe

1 1/2 oz. fresh Meyer Lemon Juice

1 1/2 oz. Tequila

1 oz. Triple Sec (or Cointreau if you want to go “top-shelf”)

sea salt for rimming glass

1. Rub the rim of an old fashioned glass (or whatever similar vessel you prefer) with a meyer lemon slice. Swirl the rim through a small pile of kosher or sea salt to salt the rim.

2. Put the meyer lemon juice, tequila, and triple sec in a cocktail shaker, add ice and shake for 15 seconds.

3. Put a few cubes of ice in your glass. Strain the cocktail into the glass and enjoy.

HOW TO SNEAK INTO A RUNWAY SHOW

On Saturday, September 11, 2010, I made it my mission to attend the Prabal Gurung show. He's said to be the new Alexander Wang, and after seeing the show I have no doubt he is. The story below is how I single-handedly snuck in and sat second row.

First, when thinking about sneaking into Fashion Week, you must put your best fashion foot forward. Search through your closet for the perfect outfit and double it. Make sure there's a lot of black; you'll blend in easier. Have your darkest pair of sunglasses on you at all times. Also, carry an attitude that will make anyone scared to question you. Once you're ready, grab your bag and head on over to Lincoln Center.

Second, you have to know what shows are going on that day and at what time. I walked up the steps of the main tent and was immediately stopped by security. No worries, I had told the man that I was there to see the ADAM show. When they ask for tickets, simply respond with "I'm on the list." Instant entry.

Next, grab The Daily and the current copy of WWD so that you have something to discuss with other people in the tents. Then put on your sunnies and stare down at your Blackberry. This way no one will bother you. Walk like you're on a mission(which you are) to the center garden. This got me past other ticket checkpoints. When I saw that the Gurung show was starting check-in, I waited a few minutes for the line to build up. I then walked around, past the other tents. Remember, don't ever look up from your Blackberry or take off your sunnies. When you see a big enough crowd, quickly and quietly wiggle your way into the middle, and don't look up.

New York Fashion Week: It gets so much publicity, and yet it's so clearly not a public event. This can be maddening to local fans like college student Maria Alexa Gee, who told today's NYDN, "It's like the Greek myth about the guy [Tantalus] who is always hungry, but he can't reach the fruit...It's right uptown, but I can't get into it."

If we've learned anything from NYFW's past season at Lincoln Center, though, it's that in some ways, the new location is actually friendlier to gate-crashers. Gee might not be able to see any runway shows, but her current plan—to round up some friends and hang out on the plaza outside the tents—isn't such a bad idea. The plaza acts as a lobby for the main building, so street style photographers tend to congregate there, and every so often someone famous (or at least fabulous) sweeps past, ticket in hand.

I know my way around a sewing machine.

I've been sewing off and on since I was teenager.

Technically speaking, I am not advanced, my strongest

attributes being a good eye for simple designs

and and pairing just the right fabric.

Fabric stores aren't as plentiful or for that matter,

as good as the used to be- except when it comes to

the high priestess of fabric emporiums...

Britex Fabrics.

Family owned and run since 1952, Britex is a go to / must see

for 'designers, sewers, do- it -yourself-ers and

anyone seeking creative inspiration.'

It is four floors of fabrics, notions et al from around the world.

The quality and selection is sublime and trust me,

it's one of those places, one can wile away an hour or 3

without the intention.

Sometimes, I go in there just to be inspired, by the colors,

the textures, the possibilities.

Now, at first one thinks, well I don't sew so why bother...

not so fast. Recently I saw an editorial for fabrics in Veranda

and had an aha moment.

Theses fabrics in frames are a great way to

curate some color and pattern onto walls, right??

Seriously, the possibilities / combinations are endless

what with an array of frames you can pick up anywhere

and the economical choice of remnants.

Creativity is everywhere. Enjoy.

have fallen by the wayside.

And yet,while the virtual world is closing in

on the printed media,

many are impassioned to preserve and protect

the world of books.

and his new shop,

Deyermond Art and Books in Santa Monica.

"A long summer road trip across the Midwest and Northeast — places with histories of institutions and wealthy families with large libraries — saw the Equator Books vet digging through yard sales, strangers’ garages, and vintage shops to uncover tomes, most of which date from the 1930s to the 1970s.

Off Season Beach Camping?

Yes, off season beach camping. How cool does that sound?

Think about it, much less crowded and,

at least here in California (sorry East Coasters) the weather is

pretty much conducive most of the winter.

I got the idea from Kevin Mulvihill who posted his trip on

Ready Made (that's his sunset).

In Northern California one of the best options

is Point Reyes National Seashore.

"From its thunderous ocean breakers crashing against rocky headlands and expansive sand beaches to its open grasslands, brushy hillsides and forested ridges, Point Reyes offers visitors over 1000 species of plants and animals to discover. Home to several cultures over thousands of years, the Seashore preserves a tapestry of stories and interactions of people."

While the water may be even chillier than summer,

with a blue sky and water to match, throw in a gorgeous sunset,

toasted dinner, wine and s'mores.

Point Reyes is the real deal when it comes to (gulp)...

backcountry camping, but the trade off would be a hugely rich experience.

COAST CAMP

Coast Camp is nestled within a small coastal grassy valley with easy access to the beach and tidepools. The beach is within 200 meters (200 yards) of the campground.

GLEN CAMP

Glen Camp is a quiet and secluded camp deep within a wooded valley protected from ocean breezes. The shortest hike to this camp is a moderate 7.4 km (4.6 miles) by foot along the Bear Valley Glen Trails.

SKY CAMP
Sky Camp is located on the western side of Mt. Wittenberg at an elevation of 310 meters (1025 feet). In clear weather, it has a sweeping view of Point Reyes, Drakes Bay, and the Pacific Ocean.

WILDCAT CAMP
Wildcat Camp is located in an open meadow on a bluff overlooking the ocean with a short walk to the beach and a 3.2 kilometer (2.0 miles) round-trip walk to Alamere Falls.

Besides these incredible sounding campsites and vistas,

Point Reyes is a National Park that offers an

incredible experience-

whether we actually make for overnight or simply make it a

fresh air and sensory filled day trip.

It's no secret, right now I am loving all things LA.

From taco truck movement, art, the Hollywood scene

and now of course Million Dollar Listing.

This gorgeous hunk of real estate is a big one but,

if anyone can sell it, it will be my boys Chad, Madison

and the Joshes who bring home

the signature direct to the dotted line.

It is called The Razor and it is 11,000 square feet

of glass perfection. As we can see, it is umm

right over The Pacific Coast and has seven bedrooms, eight baths,

a subterranean parking garage, a home theater, and

(of course!) an infinity pool. Can't wait for the open house.

They say eyes are the windows to the soul,

then maybe the Fridge is the window to what we eat?

I love looking at people's fridges.

You know, the photos, notes, magnets etc on the door.

But as an amateur voyeur, I do find the

interiors pretty fascinating. There are all types-

the MTV champagne and Evian set,

the college set- Bud Light and Prego,

young families-everything but the kitchen sink,

YUP-takeout leftovers,

the cooks-leftovers,and well stocked condiments

the organized and the unorganized...

it's all good.

It may seem strange, but trust me,
